At Prenton Primary School, we provide a carefully structured and ambitious approach to literacy that supports and stretches all pupils. Through a rich and varied diet of high-quality literature, we aim to foster a genuine love of reading and writing, inspiring pupils to become enthusiastic, confident and lifelong readers and writers. Our selection of texts includes fiction, non-fiction and poetry, exposing pupils to a wide range of themes, authors, voices and styles. This rich literary diet enables pupils to develop their imaginations, broaden their understanding of the world and engage in deeper comprehension, critical thinking and thoughtful discussion.

Our focus on teaching to greater depth in writing ensures that pupils are not only secure in key skills but are also able to manipulate language creatively, write with precision and develop their own authorial voice. Through exposure to high-quality writing and regular opportunities to read as writers, pupils are encouraged to experiment with language, develop their ideas and take pride in crafting their own work.

This is further strengthened by our consistent approach to spelling, handwriting and SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar). Through a consistent and rigorous approach to spelling that supports long-term retention and application, pupils are challenged to apply advanced spelling patterns and develop a deeper understanding of word structure. Daily handwriting practice promotes fluency and high standards of presentation, while daily SPaG lessons, alongside a weekly focused SPaG objective, enable pupils to deepen their grammatical knowledge and apply it accurately and effectively within their writing.

Together, these elements create a rich and rigorous English curriculum that supports pupils in achieving depth, independence and excellence in both reading and writing, while nurturing a lasting love of literature and the confidence to express themselves through the written word.
